Is the winter wrecking havoc on your body? Are you yearning for the days of the sun glistening off of your dewy smooth skin? Well you maybe stuck in a polar vortex, but your skin doesn't have to be.
That is why I love exfoliating. So much so that when I asked Brian to describe me in one sentence, he said, "you are a person who likes puppy dogs and exfoliating." Quite accurate!
I'm constantly striving for the silkiest skin possible and I blame my mom's love of products. Growing up, her bathroom counter was packed with lotions and potions and she always stressed the importance of skin care. To this day, I NEVER sleep with makeup on. If I fall asleep accidentally, I will wake myself up and drag my butt to the bathroom. It's like I can see her disappointed head shake at me all the way from Texas.
So I regularly exfoliate. I have one of those long wooden handled brushes that I run over me at least twice a week, but nothing works as well as a good scrub. If you ever had a chance to get a scrub/massage professionally done, DO IT. You'll never feel so good!
So here's my home recipe for a good at-home salt scrub. The coconut oil will leave you moisturized, the salt will exfoliate you and draw out your skin's impurities, the lemon will brighten your skin, and the lavender will soothe you. It smells crazy delicious and you'll want to hop in the bath as quick as you finish mixing.
- 1/3 of a cup of coconut oil (if yours is solid, just pop it in the microwave for 10-second intervals, until melted)
- 1/2 cup of coarse salt (use epsom salt if you want some added muscle relief benefit)
- 1 teaspoon of lemon zest
- 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of lavender buds
- 3-5 drops of lavender essential oil
Mix all the ingredients up and seal in an airtight jar. If your coconut oil solidifies, just pop your jar in the microwave for a few seconds before bathing, or warm it up in your bath water.
I shower as usual and rub the mixture all over and give myself a quick rinse to leave a thin layer of coconut oil on me. Pat your body dry, and anything left will soon absorb. Silky skin awaits you!
This also makes a great gift! Combine it a yummy scented candle and a fancy bar of soap and you have a terrific gift on your hands.
